How to Buy Comfortable Heels

Jan 27th, 2014 by Jenna Goldberg | Comments Off on How to Buy Comfortable Heels

Cheap and trendy heels that you find in the mall might look like a good idea at the time, but they’re sure to hurt your feet later. Heels don’t have to be uncomfortable. If you invest in a proper fitting dress shoe that is designed with cushion and support, your footwear will look good and feel good too.

It’s common to buy heels that are uncomfortable, mostly because there are so many heels out there that don’t support feet that it’s easy to get stuck with the wrong pair. A friend of mine who lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area had trouble finding comfortable heels to wear to work. Every morning she walked 20 minutes to BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) in heels that hurt her feet so she could look professional walking into the office. After a couple of weeks of sore feet, she started wearing athletic shoes on her walk and quickly changed into her work shoes on the rail before arriving at the office in Oakland. Half the time she is able to make the switch, other times she would try to slip into the office and swap out her athletic shoes for work shoes before coworkers noticed.

If this switch-a-roo sounds familiar, it’s time to discover comfortable fashion footwear so you can arrive calm, cool, and collected, and stay comfortable in heels throughout the work day.

Find heels with the right fit:

88% of women are walking around in the wrong shoe size! Feet change over time so it’s important to measure feet regularly for size (toe-to-heel) and width (left to right). Watch this video on how to measure feet. Many heels are available in half sizes and wide widths, so you don’t have to settle on a pair of heels that aren’t your size. Aetrex, SoftWalk, Naot and Ziera are just a few brands that offer hard-to-find dress shoe sizes and widths. Also look for heels that have an adjustable strap to customize the fit.

How to buy heels that you can walk in:

Back to my friend in the Bay Area, she couldn’t wear her heels walking to the BART station because she couldn’t walk comfortably in them. Many heels are unstable, which cause wobbling and shaky footing. A few features to look for when shopping for footwear with heel height are a metal shank, arch support, hallux support, a deep heel cup and shock absorption. These features will help improve stability, keep your foot comfortably in place, and prevent foot fatigue.

Measuring your feet is important for your foot health because feet continue growing and changing in size and width as you age. In fact, people over 40 tend to increase 1/2 a shoe size every 10 years. If this isn’t reason enough to measure your feet, 88% of women are wearing the wrong shoe size causing bunions and other foot conditions. Know your shoe size and width and wear footwear that fits properly. Watch the short video we made on how to quickly and easily measure feet at home.

Still Standing at Work in 2014

Jan 13th, 2014 by John Almodovar | 1 Comment So Far

John Standing at
Don’t sit for too long in 2014.  In fact, do what the staff is doing – stand at work and be more active in the office.

My standing quest started more than three years ago after I noticed numbness in my lower limbs and the lack of energy I felt throughout the day, plus, I was overweight and out of shape.  I knew that I needed to make a change in my life, which included my diet, exercise routine, and the time I spent at work since I was spending 8+ hours a day sitting in an office environment. After doing extensive research about the negative effects a sedentary lifestyle could cause, primarily because of sitting, I decided to make a change for the better by getting rid of my office chair and setting up a standing workstation.

It worked!  I lost over 70 pounds since I made the decision to change my lifestyle, which included standing at work.  I truly believe that by eating healthy, exercising, and sitting less, you can achieve positive health goals.  I’m also proud to say that because of my standing workstation, my fellow co-workers have also made the change and are now standing at work and feeling the positive effects.

I have been using my standing work station for about 6 months and the first and most significant change is that I no longer have lower back pain. The second change is that because I am moving more, I rarely feel cold during the day. Overall I am very happy with a standing workstation and will never go back to a regular sitting work station.

I read some articles on standing work stations before I tried it. No problems. I stand on a well-cushioned industrial mat and try to wear compression socks. I don’t have the best posture so standing has made me more conscious and forces me to stand straighter.  With the screen raised higher I got a chair that is also higher.  It’s great for an occasional break but not that comfortable so I want to sit in it for long periods of time like a regular, cushioned office chair.

I decided to try standing because my back was constantly hurting after sitting in the office 8 hours a day. The first week of working at my standing workstation my legs got tired easily and it was a bit of an adjustment. But now I feel great, and the best part is my back no longer hurts at the end of each work-day!

Before I had my standing desk, I had been experiencing lower back pain from spending so much time sitting. Almost the first day that I had the standing desk, I stopped experiencing it and haven’t ever since.

I really do enjoy standing (when I do actually stand)! I’ve noticed that I don’t have leg pain anymore, which I think was caused from sitting for long periods of time. When I wear my Brooks athletic shoes and my Fox River graduated compression socks, I can stand all day, with no complaints. Overall, my standing workstation experience has been AWESOME thus far!

– Jilna, Vendor Liaison

I highly recommend standing at work more often than sitting.  Remember, you can always try it and get a taller chair for occasional breaks.  Make sure you do some research and consult with a healthcare professional to see if it’s the right thing for you.  You can start by reading The Art of Standing, by Jenna Goldberg.
