Once I bought a pair of sandals with uncoated jute twine and wore them for the first time to go to the airport for a trip. My feet had rope burns all across the top, and I couldn’t take them off until I got to my destination.

I have ALWAYS hated shoes. I grew up barefoot except when walking into and out of church (I’d slip them on in the car, then off as soon as I sat in the pew). My best friend and I had a slogan and were quite convinced that ‘Shoes are an invention of the Devil.’

When I was at University I would keep getting into trouble because I would go barefoot as much as I possibly could and one lecturer declared that “You will not put your sweaty feet onto my clean carpet”.

When I do buy find a pair of shoes that are comfortable I tend to wear them until they die. I wore one pair of boots with a rubber band around the toe holding the sole on for a few weeks while I searched for a replacement pair, because I just couldn’t find anything suitable (this was before I discovered online shoe shopping!).

One summer, as I ran out the screen door, it closed and scraped the back of my heel really bad. After that, I couldn’t wear shoes without stepping down on the back so that it wouldn’t rub the back of my heel. Fortunately as a kid, I wore those thin canvas shoes and it was easy to fold the back down. But it has been a real challenge to find shoes that don’t rub the scar.

I went running in vibram five finger shoes and pulled a muscle in my foot. I couldn’t run for weeks afterward. I knew that you’re supposed to work up to a full run by spending a little time each day in the shoes to increase the strength in your feet before running and choose to ignore the advice.

Also, tweeted the giveaway and liked Katy’s page on FB.
