When shopping for shoes, consumers almost always pay attention to only two things: how the exterior of the shoes look like (style) and how the shoes fit (sizing). But what consumers often overlook is the one very important feature that’s either offered or not offered in the interior: removable footbeds to accommodate custom orthotics. Orthotic shoes offer consumers the option of replacing the original insoles with better made orthotics such as arch supports inserts or insoles with anti-bacterial and anti-odor top covers.
What most consumers don’t know is that original insoles in some orthotic shoes are meant to be temporary, and should be replaced with off-the-shelf arch support inserts or custom orthotics. Placing arch support insoles in orthotic shoes means that wearers will gain support along the arches and stability at the heel, resulting in better overall body alignment, pronation control and less foot fatigue. Because of this feature, you really can’t go wrong with orthotic shoes; plus manufacturers know this and are constantly producing newer fashionable styles of orthotic shoes so that consumers get the best of both worlds – fashionable shoes that provide a healthy, comfortable fit. At HealthyFeetStore.com, more than 90% of our shoes have removable insoles; and whether you’re seeking athletic shoes for walking or dress shoes for wearing at the office, we have various styles of orthotic shoes to choose from. Plus, our orthotic shoes come with solid heel counters and firm closure systems so that arch supports or orthotic insoles stay securely in the shoes.
Various Styles of Orthotic Shoes
Athletic Orthotic Shoes
Running and walking orthotic shoes are most likely going to be worn by very active people who exercise, so choosing orthotic insoles with arch support, anatomical designs, extra cushioning and anti-odor top covers is ideal. We recommend switching out your sport orthotics at least once a year or when necessary (depending on the wear).
Dress and Casual Orthotic Shoes
Orthotic friendly dress and casual shoes may not have removable footbeds but will have enough room to accommodate leaner 3/4″ orthotics. These types of orthotic insoles can be placed on top of non-removable footbeds; and because they’re leaner they won’t have as much cushioning as sport orthotics but will offer arch support and heel stabilization. We also recommend switching out these types of orthotics at least once a year or when needed.
Medical Diabetic Orthotic Shoes
Orthotics in diabetic shoes are primarily designed to offer comfort. They have mild arch support and more cushioning features. Because they’re suited to offer more cushion they’re not as durable, so we recommend switching out diabetic orthotics at least three times a year. Some medical orthotic shoes also come in extra-extra depth sizes so that there’s more room for prescribed orthotics.
Friendly Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Orthotic Shoes
- When putting in your new orthotics, take the old/original insoles out of your shoes and remove the laces; then place the new orthotics in the shoes and tie the laces back onto your shoes – this will ensure an optimal fit
- It could take a whole week to get used to your new orthotics:
- First day – one hour in, one hour out, then repeat
- Second day – two hours in, one hour out, then repeat
- Third day – three hours in, one hour out, then repeat
- Fourth day – four hours in, one hour out, then repeat
- Follow this pattern for an entire week or when you fully get used to your new orthotics; often times new wearers will put their orthotics in and not take them out, and because they’re not used to them will feel uncomfortable and think the orthotics are not working – give them time, your feet will thank you
- Each night take out your orthotics to keep your shoes dry; this will help the shoes go back to their original form and you’ll be able to check for cracks or damages in the interior of your shoes
